Paul Allan Ballard studied Painting and Art History at Virginia Commonwealth University including studies at Glasgow School of Art and the Corcoran College of Art & Design. His first professional illustration commissions were for role-playing games and collectible card game art. This led to working on comic book covers and licensing work with Lucasfilm on Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Since then he has also worked with Topps Entertainment on a variety of properties, including NBC Heroes, Lord of the Rings, Indiana Jones, Star Wars Clone Wars, and Star Wars Masterpieces. His illustrations were featured in the Jedi Path book and the Sith Book. He also created the 30th anniversary of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back limited edition print "The Departure", which proved to be an instant sell out. As a guest artist at Star Wars Celebration Europe II his limited edition print "Padme Ver Sacrum" combined Jugendstil art with Star Wars . Starting the summer of 2019, Paul will be hosting a video show on the cultural origins of genre fiction and pop culture.
Born in Vienna, Virginia, Paul Allan Ballard spent his childhood participating in historical re-enactments, archaeological digs, and visiting antiques shops with his artistic, historian parents. Paul became a passionate Star Wars fan in 1977, after seeing the movie's Washington DC premiere. He immediately began creating fan art inspired by the work of Ralph McQuarrie and Joe Johnston (see drawing below). This would lead to a life long fascination with illustration and art. Paul currently lives in Vienna, Austria with his cat Eva.
